All tourists (except Indian, Bangladeshi and Maldivian) visiting Bhutan are subject to the all-inclusive minimum daily tariff of US$250 per person per night during the peak season and US$200 per person per night during the lean season. The minimum daily tariff includes a Sustainable Development Fee (Royalty) of US$65 per person per night. This fee goes into development of infrastructure, public health care and education.
To boost tourism in the Eastern region, the Royal Government of Bhutan is set to waive off the sustainable development fee for all tourists visiting the eastern region. The Eastern region includes Mongar, Tashigang, Lhuntse, Tashi Yangtse, Pema Gatshel and Samdrup Jongkhar districts.
Eastern Bhutan offers tourists a journey into a true wilderness. The Eastern regions are relatively untouched by modern developments and the traditional way of life is well preserved. This new regulation will offer economic incentive for travelers to extend their stay dates and explore Bhutan extensively or choose to only explore the Eastern region.
